What do llamas eat?

Llamas browse on grass, leaves, and other plants.  Ours have enough pasture for nourishment, but we supplement with a little feed or hay as a treat and a llama feed for nutrients.  They need clean fresh water and in hot weather will drink quite a bit.  We use 5-gallon buckets for water.

What kind of fence for a llama?

Most llamas are respectful of fences and lots of different types are used.  Never use barbed wire around llamas!

Do llamas require care?

Llamas do require some maintenance care like:  worming, toenail clipping if not on rocky ground, shots, occasional brushing, and can be shorn in hot weather, or cool areas provided.

Why buy registered llamas?

Our llamas are registered so that we know their bloodline.

What can you do with a llama?

Llamas can be trained to carry packs (up to 70 pounds) and used on hikes.  They can pull a small cart, be in a parade, visit schools or nursing homes.  They are great for 4-H program kids.  They can be pets, companion animal, or  a gelded male can be a guard to sheep.  They are very gentle and most are good with children.

Do llamas spit?

Well, yes they do.  But spitting is not normally used against humans (if the llama has been raised properly with llamas and not taken away from their mama too early).  They occasionally spit at each other to say, "This is my food.  Stay away; or I told you to leave me alone!"  If you put out separate feed pans for each of them, they won't have to fight over it.
